I completely understand where your question was coming from. There are a bunch of classes out there that cover material that one can learn on their own and don't need to spend $$ on. UW Photo, Peak Bouyancy, etc...

But, IMO, ice diving is not one of them...

ice diving is pretty serious stuff, think of it on par with wreck penatration. Ice diving is yet another kind of overhead environment with it's own peculiatities and tasks, like MikeF. mentioned.
 
Good point... I guess I'll just get some experience under my belt before making any decisions about ice diving. It is something I'd like to at least experience though.

I am planing to do the ice diver training next winter after diving this summer if you are still intrested in the class mabey we can hookup I know an instructor thet will probably give us a discount if we signup together. he does for ow and aow.

we may se him in Crosby this year as he does his checkout dives there, if so I will introduce you to him. btw he is a PADI instructor.
