Hey guys!

My name is Logan Collins. My fiance and I just signed up to get PADI certified. We are going to Cabo San Lucas next month! Anyhow I wanted to introduce myself. This is most likely going to be a hobby I do for years to come. I also wanted to check if anyone has done any scuba diving in Cabo. I am wondering if a Shortie wet suit will be enough for the waters down there. Also any suggestions you have for a newbie let me know!!

Thanks!!
Logan

Logan, welcome to the board and to scuba.

Although I have nevered dived in Cabo, wetsuit thickness and type are determined by your level of comfort with the cold. I personally dive the Carib (Coz, Bonaire, Roatan) with a full 3/5mm full, with 1mm beanie, while my girlfriend uses a 3/2mm full, a 5mm hooded vest and a polar fleece. That is what keeps us comfortable. Also be aware that a full provides better protection from the elements, both above and below.

Hope this helps.

Aloha! I dove Cabo a couple times out by The Arches...it was very beautiful early in the AM, LOTS of fish and the viz dropped a lot by afternoon....

From what I hear, it can be wonderful and is somewhat underrated. I would probably go for a 3 mm or less, especially as a beginner for the protection afforded by having your arms and legs covered until bouyancy is perfected. Coral burns, scrapes sometimes take a long time to heal in my experience. Places like Mexico (and LA!) often have bacteria in the water you would rather avoid in a wound.

Logan, welcome!

I've done 2 dive trips to Cabo. The first time the water was around 72/74F (July). I wore a skin and was cold. Next trip I wore my full 3mm and hubby wore a 1mm shorty and was a tad chilled. It really depends on your body type and tolerance. Most of the diving in Cabo (unless you make the drive to Pulmo) is deeper diving. Everything starts around 50 feet, and goes to infinity so you have to watch your bouyancy in places like the Sand Falls (which is where they like to take divers). We used Amigos Del Mar both times and they were a very friendly shop. Watch your depth and time...

Go to the Office for lunch or dinner and have a drink for me!

Have a great time!

Howdy, Logan!

I haven't been to Cabo, yet, but am going in September. I look forward to your trip report when you get back.

Have fun and take lot's of pics!

Hey guys appreciate the feedback!

I have two shorties I bought for me and my fiance. Sounds like those will be fine if we're careful. We also bought two underwater cameras so I'll definitely post some pics up. It has been a pretty costly sport so far, but hopefully we've spent the biggest part. We bought the lessons, our fins, the shorties, mask, snorkel and boots. I guess we'll just rent the other gear. Anyhow I'll let you all know how it goes.

And while you're there, see if the Happy Lobster is open, Steak and Lobster and all you can drink takillya for $10..................have had many a party there!

Did you say 10 bucks? Maybe this trip wont cost as much as I thought. HaHa! Were acutally going on a timeshare thing. Were staying at the Grand Baja Resort and Spa for $47 a night! So were not spending a whole lot but hey.

I've done 5 dives at Cabo:
Early April water was 61 at the bottom (65 feet);
Late April water was 68 at the bottom (50 feet);
Late December water was 71 at the bottom (61 feet).
I'm not sure about August. All I know is that I was glad to have 5mm. Note: Most operators can provide 3 or 5 mm suits.
