I don't think her fear is irrational. You won't find me on the back of any size motorcycle..ever.

But then it is a comfort level thing. I have rolled bikes and hit trees with bike and hit chickens with bikes and after that and having good friends killed or hurt badly I still enjoy the power and the speed. It's an amazing feeling.

note to self: do NOT accept a ride on a bike from Cobaltbabe
under any circumstances

That was when I was learning how to ride. I now know how to lay a bike down properly without hurting myself or the bike. I broke my brothers motocross bike once (tree) and was in alot of pain and my father gave me such heck for that. They grabbed the bike and fixed it as I was laying on the grass moaning. Remember I come from a racing family!!! BIKES COME FIRST ALWAYS. :11:

I really think you are waisting you money on that bike. If you intend to drive to work, then so be it. If you have any intentions of going for drives in the mountains etc, get a Yamaha R6 or something (these bikes actually handles better than the smaller road bikes). The wife will get over it, mine did, they don't know anything about bikes anyway, tell her it's a 250.

PS. There is only two kinds of bike drivers, the one has fallen, on the one who is going to fall shortly.

lots of experienced riders think newbies should confine
themselves to riding 250's for a while. i do know it's going
to be underpowered. if i could, i would get a 500. but i
don't have the money and it's a moot point anyway.

am i going to be antsy in a few weeks, wishing i had
a better bike? you bet. but it's better than no bike.
and it will allow me to hone my skills for a while before
moving up.

no, sorry. we reached a compromise and i can't go back on it

H2Andy:
that's why i love the Yamaha 250... the v-twin looks so darn sweet...

Both the Virago & the MSD Course - I highly recommend the later and I ride a Virago 750.

I talk myself out of one every week. :eyebrow:

Talk yourself into one. You won't regret it. Make sure it's an R bike though.

...after 30+ years of riding motorcycles, I would advise you AWAY from the 250. I know that your wife is an issue, but explain to her that you will be SAFER on a 400 cc or larger. I would look at a Honda 400-500cc motorcycle used and start with that. A 250 just doesn't have guts enough to get you out of a tight spot where you will have a better chance with the larger displacement motor. The weight of the 400+ is only a little more than the 250, but the horsepower will be nearly double and it all works out to physics and weight to horsepower ratio. For riding on the road, stick to 400+ cc's and you will be happier with it. The 250 will get pretty small pretty quickly, where the 400-500cc will seem like 'enough' bike for quite a while longer....

Good luck with the purchase! I'm thinking that my next one will be a big Honda VTX (either 1300 or 1800cc) after riding a Goldwing the last few years, I feel a need to ride with my feet out in front!

yes... alas, i can't afford it anyway and we have to take baby steps on this one
