Before you make a decision, check out second hand prices for the Alpha. If the market in the US is anything like the UK, Chinese/Taiwanese/Korean bikes suffer from very high depreciation. You will want to sell your 250 at some stage, and it will be easier to sell a Yamaha, and you'll get a much better price for it.

You can carry your dive kit on a bike as well :)

hmm... good point on the depretiation...

decisions, decisions...

i saw the Alpha, and it looks sweet... reminds me of a 40's Harley, except the
seat is not independent...

whta to do... what to do...

I tell ya, #3 will do it every time!

That's funny, I tell my husband, "Sure, you can have your bike, but I get my pilot's lisence" He always seems to decide he doesn't want the bike after all...

You might consider buying used. You'll get a better price that way and you won't feel as bad when you drop it for the first time (or 2nd...or 3rd) -- and you probably will drop it.

I'm not saying you'll crash it, I'm saying DROP it. It's awkward at first to get used to the top-heavy weight of a bike, and it's really easy to dump it when you're stopping or starting or making a low speed turn. The only thing likely to be wounded is your pride ... and maybe your chrome or paint job.

Or you can buy a used one, like a year or two old...

yeah, i've been looking, but for some reason the market
around here is not saturated with used 250's of any sort...

did find a used Suzuki GZ250, but i don't think i want to go
with this bike (new or used) after all...

i will continue to look for a used one though... will probably buy
next week, one way or another

Yeah, you right...
The US market is more topheavy, there are probably way more used 600 or larger. Althoguh Florida is a pretty good motorcycle state. Should be able to find something there now that it is warming up.

Do you have a for sale by owner publication there for motorcycles? In CA, it was called the Motorcycle trader. They have free ones that are usually filled with ads from dealers, and then the ones you pay for are mostly made up of private offers, and better prices.

Just like a car, you can ask to have a mechanics inspection before the sale, though there are many less systems than in a car, so not nearly as much to go wrong (in that class of bike not many bells and whistles).

alright... the Alpha Sport V Twin it is... out the door price was $4400, including
parts and labor to add a windshield, foot-rests, back-rest, and luggage rack.

thank you all for your help on this one

You do realize that riding a street bike is WAY more dangerous than diving to 1.8 PPO2. Get a dirt bike dude and THEN a 250 will pull your shoulders out of socket. All who said a 250 is a small bike probably have not climbed aboard any of todays motocross bikes, like a YZ250 or any of the Japanese big name bikes. My son rides a KX250 and hits big air and rides fast.....on dirt.... but I told him he has to pay his own bills before he rides a street bike. Too many drivers that don't see you. Just a thought.
