Hi everybody. I'm new in this forum. I'd like some advice about dive computers. I own an old Suunto Solution. I'm very happy with it, but now I want to purchase a new Nitrox computer. I'm afraid I will not get any with the same level of (few) conservativism than my old Solution. I like Suunto brand, but I've been told that the new models (Vyper, Mosquito, etc) are much more conservative than the old ones. It happened the same with the old and new Uwatec Aladins....the newers they are, the more conservative they made them.
I know that we know more now about decompression than before (microbubbles, etc), but I'm happy with the level of conservativism that I have now.
I don't mind to hang from a decompression line as much as I need, but I don't think I need to add more minutes. I know it would be safer; but even safer is to stay dry and not dive at all.
So I would like to know which is your oppinion about this, and wich brands you suggest me. Don't forget that I don't live in the USA. I live in Spain, and we don't have the same brands you have there.
I use to dive deep, and sometimes I do long decompressions. Also sometimes I go out on a live aboard, and made a lot of repetitive dives. Any of these two circumstances willgive you a lot of decompression time.
As I said before, I'm not a crazy diver, and I do all the decompresion I need (even more, because I always stay some more minutes after my computer has cleaned). I just would like to know abou which are the least conservative dive computers on the market. I'm not thinking about air integrated computers, because I like to wear it wrist mounted, and the only models on the market of this type are Uwatec's.
Any information about the Cressi's Archimede or the Mares Nitrox Surveyor?
I would say that Suunto, Uwatec, Mares, Cressi, Scubapro and maybe Cochran are the only brands we can get here (I don't think I could buy a Dive Rite if you should suggest me so).

Sorry for writing so much. I would like to give you the most information possible about what I want. Thank you for your help.

.......and Welcome to the boards!!!

I can't help with your question. I dive a Suunto Cobra with a Mosquito for back up. But I don't have experience with anything else to compare it to.

Just wanted to welcome you! :D:

Tavi........in Rochester NY

then buy a BT and some deco software. Adjust the GFs
and insert no deep stops etc. There, now you are diving
liberally.

G_M,I've tried that.It only worked if it was a square profile and I turned off the conservatism(0%).The cool thing is with software tho is the graphics on tissue loading. It allows you to really skirt the rules.I always end up inside the numbers tho cause most of my buddies are less likely to take chances.I dive an Oceanic Data Plus 2.

If you can get your hands on a Zeagle Status or Status II, they are one of the more aggressive computers on the market. They are also one of the few these days that will not lock you out no matter what you do. I know DiveInn carries Zeagle's BCs, so they can probably get you the computers as well. But you'd probably get one cheaper by ordering it from a place here in the US.

From what I hear, the Cochran Commander is sold with EXTREMELY liberal settings, which the diver can set to suit his own diving needs. I use an Aladin and have never used a Cochran, but my boyfriend has one..and the first time he dove with it..it actually scared him! (he used his Aladin too so he could compare them). But, once it was set to what he wanted, it was fine.

Just adding my wooden nickel I really enjoy my AERIS 500AI

just dove with a buddy that uses the hoseless Aeris 750GT

I don't advocate the use of console computers(there is a wrist-mount version), but the 300G is great if you like liberal. I did a dive with 2 friends on Saturday. We had a Vyper, Aladdin Ultra, Nitek, and Aeris 300G. The Vyper had 16 minutes of deco, the Aladdin had 14, the Nitek had 10 and the Aeris had 3.
Hope this helps

On the other hand here...

There is a good thread a while back on someone who loved his nice liberal computer, did a couple dives, gave him a 4 hr. time to fly, and he spent the next couple weeks in and out of chambers in different hospitals. It is still up in the air concerning permanent damage.

I was just diving with someone who had a Uwatec I think and after a couple hour long dives in the middle of 3 days/14 hours bottom time of diving, it was giving us a 6 hr. time to fly. Fairly ridiculous.

On this trip, in 2.5 days, we did 5 dives, 3 dives, and 1 dive the last day. (and thats just cause we had to leave) We dove completely square profiles on the Naui tables on Nitrox between 32 and 35% mixes. We could easily have done more diving while using different mixes, just where we were at had mainly commercial sites that closed around 5.

My suggestion is to use more tried and true methods of getting more bottom time than what a dive computer company says you can get. There job is to sell computers if you get to the nitty gritty of it. The dive tables are there to keep you safe, and even those of course are not bullet proof.

There is also the issue of it conking out, if/when it does, you run into problems diving afterward.
