Has anyone had the repeated experience of finding good buddies under water after the supposed buddies have flaked out. They seem to be everywhere and happy to hook up. ( I know, who's flaking out on who? I'm just not going to chase down any more oblivious what-ever-you-want-to-call-thems and I feel safer for it)

LOL

Are you saying that a person who has agreed to meet you to dive "never showed" and that you went diving anyway and found them underwater?

I'd have to say that I've never had that happen....

Sounds like this ought to go in Whine and Cheese, or humor....(sorry!)

One of our instructors had the experience of picking up 4 extra divers during a training dive. He went down with 6 divers, sent two away with the DM and shortly after that noticed that he had 6 divers again..... Initially he thought the two extra were his and that the DM had to bail but when the DM came back again with 4! other divers (his two plus two more who had latched onto him) it was really time to surface and sort it out.... LOL

We had a similar thing happen in an OW class back when I was DM'ing ... but I would far rather come out of the water with too many students than with too few ... :11:

That would have to be causing someone a lot of stress! "Crap! I lost the whole class!"

Are you saying that while underwater your buddy swims off with out you, and you then locate another lone diver (also underwater) to hook up with and finish the dive?

About a year and a half ago, some shop has a "fun dive" at the local lake. About 8 divers there and I don't know any of them. DM looks around and says," OK you're with him", and pairs everybody up. "Here's the plan", he says. "Go out that way, don't go below 60' and we'll meet back at the dock."
Then, as if on cue, everyone jumps off the dock and drops down to the bottom at 22'. I'm following down my new "buddy", who I have not said one word to, and at the bottom, I'm enveloped in a huge cloud of silt. There's only 3' vis. without the silt, and with it about 3 inches. I swim around looking for my buddy, bump into someone else, search some more and can't locate him. Seems like everyone has taken off. I turn on my light, which does nothing, try to get above the silt, finally see this guy come out of the cloud and take off alone. So I follow him.
Of course, this turns out not to be my buddy, but he is now! As we're swimming, I'm checking out his gear - where's his alt air, etc. But this dude is swimming like it a race and I'm just trying to keep up. (BTW his octo is zipped into a BC pocket).
We hit 60' feet and he just keeps going... 70...80...90... Finally I grab his arm and point back toward the dock. He nods, whips around and starts racing back toward the dock.
We're about half way back in 50' of water when he starts swimming straight up. At 15' he stops dead. He's obviously negative and finning to stay at 15' as he stares at his consul. Oh, I get it. Safety stop. But after about a minute, he hits the surface. I remain at 15', finish my SS while following him as he surface swims toward the dock. 35 minute dive.
Back on the dock, we introduce ourselves to each other. I ask why he was going so much deeper than the plan. He says, "I just felt like going to 100'. Never been there before." I ask about his short safety stop, He says, "I couldn't finish because I was low on air, and I like to end all my dives with 300psi."
When everyone else finally returns, I find out that only one pair actually dove as planned. One guy solo dived and there was a group of three as well. It was all random based on who could find who. The guy I was supposed to dive with tells me, "Oh, it's always like this. No big deal."
The DM (one of the threesome) says, "Nice dive."
I don't dive with this LDS group any more, although some of them call me for other local dives.
I once stayed at a resort (Mikes - Hoodsport area) 300 miles on the other side of the state. When the guy heard I was from Spokane, he said, "You're not with those nuts from Such-and-Such shop are you?"
That was my only time choosing a buddy during the dive.

Well, somethat. My buddy didn't flake out, 'cause she came with me, but we did pick up two buddies during the dive......two 1 - 2' remoras that wouldn't leave us!!!
