Hi All,
Last year in Cozumel, I had 2 noose bleeds while ascending. I am a relatively newer diver with 18 dives logged. We did come up quite slowly. I am prone to nose bleeds as are members of my family. Is this normal, and can I expect this again? I have only seen one other diver experience this, but he shot up to the surface very quickly, as I did not. ( on a diferent trip)
I'm looking forward to my trip to Cozumel in March again! I just love the diving there!!!
Thanks for any input anyone can give me.

Sounds like you had a sinus squeeze.
If you don't equalize on the way down something needs to take the place of the shrinking air space. Closest thing is poping a small blood vessel and filling the sinus with blood. On accent the air expands again pushing the blood out of the sinus.

Of course I'm not a Doc and your milage may vary.

I do suggest speaking to a MD that is familiar with diving. Possibly an ENT.

However, I do know several divers that always get nose bleeds on ascent. No matter how careful they are.

Your family history would indicate that you get nose bleeds pretty easily. The change in pressure and equalizations may be just enough to cause you a nose bleed. In other people, with similar conditions, this would never happen.

As stated above by fppf, I'm not a doc either. I am an EMT, but that doesn't even make me close to being medically qualified to diagnose you over the internet.

I have the same problem with nosebleeds. Someone has told me that it was just a broken blood vessel, and it is nothing to worry about. I assume that it is a good idea to seek medical help if the nosebleeds are accompanied by a headache, nausea or dizziness because this may indicate a more serious injury.

BTW (sorry to change the subject) When are you going to Coz in March? I am going March 8 -16 and staying at Cozumel Palace.

While doing my OW cert I got a nose bleed after doing a CESA... and after the final dive of the day, even after being careful. I understand it is common for some to have a slight nose bleed after diving and it will go away with time. I guess the blood vessels in the nose toughen up after time. However if your nose bleed does not stop immediately after accent I would seek professional help to make sure there is nothing else wrong. Both times for me there was just a little blood and than nothing.

My family has a similar problem. It can result from capillaries in the mucus membrane being very close to the surface of the naso-pharynx or concha. One way to combat this it through coterization of some of the surface vessels. An ENT should be the one to perform such a task.

Common causes include genetics, frequent nose picking, and recreational drug use.

I used to get nosebleeds all the time. For some reason they stopped. The instructor on my liveaboard in Thailand noticed and all she said to me was "You have tiny eustachian tubes." She was right. On my last liveaboard in Australia, I didn't have any. But I also had less problems equalizing so that may be it.

I had a similar problem. I used to get nose bleeds sitting watching tv, sleeping, sneezing, you name it. Delt with it for 32 years. Finally went to an ent and 15 minutes later he said i should never have another one. Been two years now without one. He cauterized a couple vessles and that was the end. It is so nice not having bleeds any more. Go to an ENT might be the best thing you've ever done.

What type of nose bleed did you have? There is a huge difference between flowing blood (like taking an elbow to the nose) or there was some blood in my mask.

If it was the flowing blood type (or close to it), I would recommend seeing an ENT doctor.

If it was a little blood in the mask or a small water+blood trail from the nose, I would lean towards the side that you forced equalization during the descent.
