Wanted a fourth pair of 85s so I could dedicate two to Trimix and two to nitrox. Put out the word among a few friends yesterday that I was looking for a used pair. Got a message from one friend that a mutual acquaintance had just gotten a bunch of NEW tanks at his shop elsewhere in the Midwest. One pair of 85s wasn’t spoken for and they were on hold for me. Closed the deal yesterday and I’ll have them in a couple of weeks. Someone is bringing them to a shipwreck event in Michigan for me. About $1100 out the door with tax and the nice Thermo modular valves I prefer. This enables me to get helium in Detroit at $2.50/cft from @Tracy to save some $$.

There went the tax refund (which I got last week)!

I’m still pinching myself that I got a new pair these days. DGX has been out for months. :D

$1100? Is that correct?

Quick question.. I dive LP85's and HP100's in backmount, I really can't tell a difference. Are they all that different in SM?

P.S - happy that you're happy!

Yep - $1100. That does include tax. And the very nice Thermo modular valves which aren’t cheap under normal conditions. The tank cost has gone up. No way around it. No used 85s in the Midwest that I can find. I didn’t need these, but they make my diving life more convenient.

I’m told 100s hang heavy in SM. I’ve never dived them. 85s have the buoyancy characteristics to be pretty much ideal for SM, from what I’ve read here. They trim out beautifully. Very nice to dive.

That's interesting. I've never done SM, but whenever I switch between doubles I try to "feel" the difference, I just can't. I guess because all the mass is on the back and not the sides, idk.

Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Faber (or whomever they are now) tanks (currently what you "can" get) are very different form Wothington/XS Scuba (no longer manufactured), the latter being much heavier...

The Worthington/XS Scuba LP 85 are anchors. I love them for back mount doubles in a dry suit.... I've been told they are highly undesirable in SM...

YMMV

Spend $1100 to save $2. Diving economics makes perfect sense.
Ranks right up there with buying a rebreather and training to save money.

Oh, I'm one of those who bought a rebreather...
The $2 savings on helium is just because I’m already in town. Otherwise the cost of gasoline wouldn’t make it worthwhile to drive 10 hours round trip. CCR is next year (hopefully). I have people who will gladly buy tanks off me if I want to sell a pair.
