Neil, speaking of technique, here's Korsakoff played on piano but it's equally impressive on many instruments. This piece has always come across to me as purely a technique bit but watch this pianist. If what she's doing weren't so dumbfoundingly amazing you would almost think Korsakoff *intendend* this to be played as music. As an aside, this isn't Korsakoff's original composition. That ambidextrous rolling up and down thing she does at about the minute mark is jaw dropping and comes from the Hungarian super-talent Cziffra. I doubt there are many pianists who can acutally play this arrangement.

And here's Marsalis playing it on the trumpet. I don't like this one at all because he tries to stylize it instead of just showing us what he can really do... but that's Marsalis for you. An extremely talented musician who spending his whole career holding back something.... like he's waiting.

And a rendition on bass guitar (complete with wah-wah accompaniment) which I personally found pretty impressive. The strings on a bass guitar are pretty thick (I thought) to play this fast.... But then again, it's not my instrument.

At the risk of insulting anyone I would tend to agree. It's a great orchestral instrument but it really shouldn't have been pushed into service for playing jazz or pop, which is usually what people think of when they say things like this.... LOL

Tonight I was having a laugh with my piano teacher because I've been watching all these youtube music videos and I came across one of a recorder quartet playing an organ piece from Bach. I really honestly never thought you could make music on a recorder until I saw this.

The recorder was a prominent instrument from the 14th into the 18th century. There's TONS on music written for it. Pretty much anything we call Baroque music had recorders intended when the word "flute" is seen unless a transverse flute is specifically asked for.

I came across this video on Youtube and I have to share it.

I don't play the guitar, I play another instrument, and even if you don't like rock music you have to see this.

Watch his body..... he is *so* relaxed playing this... it's obvious for someone who plays and instrument (any instrument) to see that what he's doing here isn't even anywhere near his boundary level.

What an amazing talent.

It is good to see what a young kid with talent can do when he invests countless hours playing guitar rather than Guitar Hero (the video game) like his friends probably do.

Well how about that, you learn something every day....

I'll have to totally change the way I think about a recorder. Up until now I just thought it was primarily used to discourage young school children from pursuing music any further.

Indeed. If those kids would stick with it, it's a logical and common leap to modern orchestral instruments like the clarinet or flute.
