Well, it is done! Or should I say, it is just beginning! I finished my OW this weekend. I got both PADI and NAUI OW certified. We went down to Devils Den in Florida for the first day of diving, and Blue Grotto for the second day. My instructor, and his four assistants (one my g/f's father), all told me they were very impressed with how easily I figured everything out, and how well I responded to every situation they put me in. On my sixth dive, my instructor even took me on a 90 foot dive to the bottom of Blue Grotto and had me do my skills, and problem solving down there. He said that I was the first diver he has ever had that he felt comfortable enough with to do that so early in my training. Unfortunately, the girl that was taking the class with me, did not get certified. He did not feel that she could do her skills well enough, so he is going to continue to work with her as long as she needs.

I can't even begin to explain how much fun I had. I am sure you all know the feeling though, otherwise you would not be in this sport. I can't wait for Ginnie Springs and Vortex next month!

I would also like to acknowledge the fact that an instructor can make all of the difference in the world. My instructor is great. He is an ex Navy Seal, and an experienced cave diver. He has more patience than anyone I have ever seen. He will work with you as long as you need, and never do anything that you are not comfortable with. On the other hand, there was a lady who was also doing an OW class next to us. Talk about a mean B****! She cussed at her students, scolded them, and yelled constantly. Even on surface intervals she would scold them for doing things she did not deem acceptable, such as listening to headphones. I can say that if she had been my instructor, I would not be certified because I would have walked out. She had six students, and no DM's or assistants with her. On the other hand, my instructor had 4 students, 2 doing OW and 2 doing AOW, and had four assitants. I feel sorry for her students.

Anyway, enough rambling.

Bravo well done! Welcome to the wonderful world of diving.

Thanks! I am still excited and can't wait to get back in the water. On the drive home I kept seeing rivers and ponds and wondered what was under them!

Ari, I plan on continuing as far as I can. The group i dive with goes on trips at least once a month, so I will be doing it now too.

It is good to hear :) there still are good instructors. I think for a number of instructors the principle certify-and-cash is attractive, especially in tropical resorts.

Here, in the Netherlands, I guess dive training is quite good. This is because diving circumstances are rather demanding: cold water, thick suits, low visibility, shallow depths (demands better buoyancy control). We still learn how to buddy breathe and we have to know the entire PADI book contents (I've seen worse abroad).

Mmmm, tell me more about the B***... :spank: LOL

Big James

Congratulation of a successful certification !

I am pleased you ended up with a nice instructor - I think that is one of the overriding factors when it comes to learning to dive!

Anyway - now I am rambling so I'll make it short and sweet - well done hun :thumb:

Cogratulations Big Jim

How the afun starts.. enjoy..

This is one of those "you know you're a diver when..." things! I'd say you're hooked good and proper :thumb:

Congrats!!!

Sounds like you definately have the fever. Its great that you had an instructor you like and trust. Hard to beat an ex Navy Seal. One of my best friends is a retired Navy Seal team commander. He and I will do a lot of dives together.

Im doing my OW cert dives next Friday and Saturday at Vortex Springs and Cypress Springs. I hope it goes as well as yours. During the drive home (11 hours)grrrrrr!, I will think about your comment whenever I see water anywhere! I'll probably take a little sidetrip over to Destin and check it out. Im planning a vacation there later this summer, so I thought Id stop by the dive shope there and pick up some info.

Congrats again!!

Thanks guys. I really have caught the fever. How could you not?

Yeah, I was really lucky with my instructor. He is a good freind and dive buddy of my g/f's father, so I will be diving with him a lot. One of his first statements in class was "If you ever need a dive buddy when we are finished, call me, I will always go with ya." So that was cool.

Scuby, let us know how things went for you. Also let me know how you like Vortex, as I will be diving there next month.

ScubaJorgen, you must like punishment! LOL!:D
