If you are boat diving, donning and removing your equipment in the water may ease the strain on your ankle. Especially climbing out. Your healing ankle may not provide you the strength and coordination you normally depend upon (and need) in a pitching boat on a seaway. This is especially so while wearing your gear.
I'll second the swimming with fins in a pool suggestion. I get some fins-in-the-pool time before every dive trip.
