Hey Guys,

I need some advice. I am looking for a neat compact travel setup. I dive a fair amount each year but always have to hop on a plane. I do one big dive a year and want to make sure that my BC can handle it. My last big dive was 10 days in COCOs Island. I like the back plate idea but have no interest in cave diving. Any thoughts?

Thanks...

I think you should get a back plate, and avoid diving in caves.

...if you'll pay my way to Cocos, I'll schlep your 'large BC' for ya....deal?

I imagine you'll get a lot of "Get a backplate" responses and I'll second all of them. Backplates aren't only for the technical crowd, they have a lot of advantages and one of them is that they pack better which makes them a bit easier to travel with.

I am not a BP fan but Zeagle has a new one that might just do what you want. Check out the Express Tech. A 24 lb bladder attached to a soft backplate. This thing packs almost flat, weights 4 lbs and is fairly inexpensive - in the $260 range...I just got one.

What are you carrying? I gave away my ScubaPro Classic Plus for this reason. I think the ScubaPro Classic Sport is pretty streamlined compared to a lot of BCs. I went with a DSS bp/w, which seems lighter than my old bc even with the 6-pound steel plate, and is much less bulky. If you really want to go compact and light for travel, they sell a Kydex plate.

Scubapro makes the Equator BC. It is a new model for 2009. It does not have a solid rear plate like most BCs do which makes it perfect for a compact BC to travel with. The down size is it will not support "heavier" people.

I myself have not tried it out but saw it in a catalog and read the specs. Don't take my post as an endorsment for it.

I myself have several different BCs and when I'm looking for something easy to pack or travel with I take my OMS Back Plate BC. Choose all the options you want and assemble it yourself. Much like most BP/W's out there.

On a normal dive I have nothing in the pockets and only my Saftey Sausage and mirror. If I am diving at night then I add an extra light. The only other thing I have with me is my line cutter which is very compact. I have an integrated Zeagle inflator/octopus.

I saw the Zeagle Express Tech, is it comfortable? Can you exchange the straps for more comfortable straps?

Thanks
