Kind of a misleading title for your thread; David's last words are the bottom line (pun intended), "but still, no one knows where they will mate." Or how. Competition Pod is how most knowledgeable observers describe this behavior.
Right Whales have been filmed mating, which sometimes takes three males and the longest tool in the world. After seeing their foursome mating technique, the bottom has always been my theory of how 100 tons of Humpback Whales manage to come together
Just found a YouTube of a Right Whale pair managing to hook up by themselves. Right whales don't care who is watching. Humpbacks are not exhibitionists.

There are very few Holy Grail's to capture without serious financing these days. The first person to get footage of Humpbacks front humping is going to be able to sell that Holy Grail for some serious coin!
