One thing that I learned a long time ago, was then reinforced in my scuba class and has been mentioned here was that when you are breathing off the snorkel, keep your tongue up and in line with the opening. That way you'll have a quicker response if water backs up into it. Also, I prefer the displacement method for clearing the snorkel. It doesn't spray all over the place and is also a bit quieter if you do it slowly. Just always assume it is full of water when you breathe in. Here is a video that shows both methods.
