You are the only one I know that prefers a retractor for navigation vs a wrist mount SK7. Those offering wrist mount advice, I know to be highly qualified. Retractors are junk and do not belong attached to scuba divers.

anyone here have something usefull for me?

Step away from the retractor, pick up a broom, or a stick, or a piece of dowel, or an old dried carrot, and push the dead thing into a garbage can.

I had my retractor break also. I just bought a larger more heavy duty retractor with a split ring on the end. I took a hole punch and punched a hole in the rubber boot to attach to the split ring. I also like mine on a retractor, so that I can let students use it attached to their BC. I recently purchased an Atomic Cobalt computer and love the compass in it, so will probably only use my SK7 with students.

I don't know how to get it open. But just for a show of support I'll say I prefer my compass in my console which is on a retractor. Haven't died yet.

(I also prefer not to have more stuff on my wrist than just my computer. Plus since I don't use my compass that often, I find a console is a fine place to store it, along with my backup computer.)

i only use my compass with students. hardly ever need it when diving privately. and with a retractor i can simply attach the compass to my bcd and be done with it.

on topic:
i am surprised no one has ever tried to open a suunto retractor. looks like i will have to email them. but i bet they'll just tell me to buy a new one :-(

Such cases are typically not meant to be opened as they have barbs on the tabs that hold them together. That said many can be opened using a credit card i.e. something plastic and rigid enough to push the plastic around which disengages the tab. Do search on opening an iPod and that will given you and idea on what is involved. I have no idea whether the retractor has the same on construction.

Retractors have their place, for those who prefer a console using a retractor is great. Keeps the console from dragging while making it easy to grab and read.
