I just take whatever is handy, mostly a piece of wood. Place the tank on a table so that the bottom with the boot hangs clear and run the wood along the tank sides so that it hits the boot square, change sides ever two wacks and it should come off quickly.

My first choice is a rubber mallet as well. If I don't have that, I'll use a hammer and just be a lot more careful (and take much smaller strikes). They tend to come right off.

I do the same as Gilldiver. I usually use the BFW I use to get the valve off with. Slide it back and forth along the tank, turning the tank every couple of strikes.

The more demanding task is to put a boot on the tank, not to remove a boot.

I took off a boot for VIP, but I couldn't put it on again. LOL~~~~

This is where the boot in hot water soak is a plus.
