How many people pack their regulator/computer and how many carry it on the plane?

Bill B.
I carry on regs, cameras, dive computer, dive compass and pack the other stuff in split bags (in case of loss I only need to rent 1/3 to 1/3 set).

Every now and then the baggage screener's eyes pop out and they become awake when they scan my carry-on with the reg hoses coiled along with the dense first stage and dive computer.

This last happened last week in Tokyo, on the way back, and I was trying to mime scuba diver to explain what it was to them ;)

I carry them on.

I pack my regular, wireless dive computer, detachable integrated safe second and prescription mask in a (specially configured) standard reg bag, for airline carry-on luggage. All other gear, including a rolled up shortie go in my Tilos dive suitcase, which is checked baggage for the cago hold. Standard practice is to personally carry your high value, small, critical components.

My carry-on bag that I take on dive trips has my regulator, mask, dive computer, camera equipment, 1 change of clothes and toiletries. If the rest of my luggage doesn't make it on time, I can survive, rent what dive gear I need and dive til it does with what I have. I have an LL Bean backpack that holds it all.

If I check any bags (which is most of the time), the I'll just pack everything and carryon the minimum -- cert card and credit card. eyebrow

Renting a reg isn't the end of the world.

Mine, a Henderson Hyperstretch, has been stuffed in duffle bags, dive bags and back packs. I bought it 4 years ago and have used it in pools, fresh and salt water on about 125 dives. Well used but not abused. As good as new.
I take reasonable care of my gear, but don't obsess about it. Like yours, my wetsuits have no noticeable wear or damage from being packed many, many times.

I used to check everything, not anymore after this whole issue about airport security, Unfortunately I am one of the victims with a missing reg after airport security checked my bags in order to "protect me". Sure i made it safe to my destination, but i believe i don't have to give $600 + of my equipment to an airport security guy everytime they want to check my bags.
I asked the airline if it was possible to get U$ 4 from each passenger who enjoyed a safe flight on my expense to get my reg replaced ;) ... my idea didn't fly long and the airline didin't recognize a penny either.

Wetsuit...i place it over a beach towel and roll both together like a sleeping bag. I once had the wrists of a wetsuit stick to the hips after a trip (perhaps i rolled too tight and/or luggage was left in the sun/high temperatures for a long period of time). the towel layer has worked just fine ever since.

My carry on bag is exactly as described by VTDiver2. Works perfect.

Should I pack everything besides my reg and comp into a regular suitcase?

We're a diving family of 3 and we pack our gear as follows:

Eagle Creek Tanker Trunk (largish rolling duffel):
* fins in the bottom, fin tips toward the center, heels toward the ends
* rolled-up wetsuits (rolled as tightly as I can)
* gigantic save-a-dive
* often, 1 of the mesh bags from duffel 2, below
* dive lights and batteries

Tanker Trunk #2
* 3 BCs, all on their backs
* mesh bags with mask, etc., stuffed inside the BCs

Carry-on:
* 3 regs
* pack-towels (between the regs)
* dive logs & wallet with C-cards
* 5 empty garbage bags (we put our wet gear in them to keep the bags from being mildewed)

We've got it down to almost exactly 50 lbs per duffel (the no-extra-charge limit on several airlines).
