How to obtain a basic scuba fitness level?

... oh... one other thing that's great for stamina (and will help to build up killer legs for those swims into the jaws of a current) is the stationary bike... if your gym has (Lifecycle or some such...)... great for getting your cardio up. A neat technique for this is to get yourself an IPod (... or walkman if yer' like me) and make yourself a play list of music you like that goes from easy to rockin to mellow and back... (the song "Maniac" from the movie Flashdance is a great one...)... you'll find that you tend to pedel along with the music after a while...

The 'floor' thing works well with this too... and the music keeps ya' from getting too bored...

As several people have touched on, you might also want to consider the social side of the particular exercise you do. With some long duration activities like walking, running or cycling, one option you may want to look out for is a club where people talk a lot while on the road. A decent conversation can make that hour or three much more tolerable, although not every group has this sort of culture.
