I guess it must be an insta-buddy thing, someone reminds me to look at my SPG fine, but they should be able to trust my ability to decide if it's alright. An OK should be a sufficient answer.
That would depend on the pre-dive chat, your actions so far and my evaluation there of etc..

I don't know you, you don't know me. Trust requires time.

I'll be at CCV in June, so we shall see.

You need to get to the north side or West End for diving if you haven't.........(there's only 2 dives worth going to the south side, Mary's Place & Cara a Cara)

In '04 we stayed at AKR. This time is CCV. I have no idea what to expect. I didn't think Mary's place was all it's cracked up to be, but then again, the vis was down as there were many before me in the water. I'd like to see some nice swim throughs and possible caves if they truly exist. I have seen some great pics that are really cavern or nice swim throughs, but I have no idea where things are.

btw, I notice you are a Tiger fan. I went to Tulane from '83-'87; what's left of it ;)

One thing this topic reminded me of was beware the metric / imperial differences.

The only signals we use (besides showing eachothers manometer) is half tank (100 bar) with the time out signal and 25% left (50 bar) with the closed fist signal.

When diving in my context this is easy because there are only 2 simple signals that are mandatory to give which makes miscommunication harder. Most of us dive the same tank (15 liter or 12 liter).... so up until 30 meters (100 feet) 50 bar (25%) provides sufficient safety margin (recreational diving... so within NDL and no ceiling). By using only 2 signals that are proactive (you should give both 50% and 25 % to your buddy) you provide all necessary info to your buddy or your buddy to you if you are leading the dive.

Of course the above takes into consideration the tankvolume... BI tanks 12 or 10 liter vs 12 liter at 50 bar is of course a huge difference. (1200 litres/1000 litres vs 600 litres)

Cheers

Then I guess I don't know why we're diving together. As I said, it must be an insta-buddy thing.

One more point that is a pet peeve of mine- with the one handed number system, the other distinction is whether the palm is facing or away. Sometimes sideways doesn't make as much sense when you are horizontal. :D

The other advantage of one handed signals is that if it's dark and spooky, you can use your other hand to illuminate your blue gloves so your buddy can see you, rather than have your buddy blind you while you try to signal.

Me and my buddy just count them off on fingers. 2200 is a peace sign two flashed two times. 1500 is a one, five. My buddy just tends to just look at my gauge...

ONE NINE ZERO ZERO

one hand communication

1 finger vertical then 4 fingers horizontal then gloved "ok" then gloved ok
ONE NINE ZERO ZERO

Mary's Place is good when the water(seas) are right....lots of seahorses (usally) @ the end(top) of the dive......85% of the time the south side is rough due to the prevailing winds, that's why the north and west end are better average wise......There are caves but you won't see(dive) them--Bear's Den is a good example, it's done but not like in the 80's & 90's.....One of our sons DM'ed & instructed there for 3 and a half years, he took us on many of the non-tourist dives but that was special (in our own boat etc etc)....

Example about south vs north side, we 1st (out of 25 trips) went to Roatan in June '94 & stayed @ FI(right across from CCV)...4 out of 6 days of diving they bussed us to the north side where they kept 2 or 3 boats parked---seas were very bumpy on the south side & it was rough the 2 days we dove the south side(couldn't do SI outside the reef, had to pull into Jonesville for the rest).....

As far as Tulane, IMO they are hurting...You can probably find out more than me(I don't keep up with them) but there was talk last year of killing most of their sports programs ie they make no money from them......This year we're in the 2nd year of a 10 year home & home with them, most Tiger football fans are thinking this contract won't make it all the way.......Time will tell about them but it might be getting short......

It never fails I get the pilots doing all the side ways hand stuff...so I just figure, "you're a pilot, so hopefully I can trust you to watch your air"

I'm a pilot and use that system, however I'm curious as to why you say pilots use it? I wasn't taught anything like that as a pilot. I know I'd read of many ways of signaling pressures and to me this one sounded best.

What do you think makes a pilot choose this one?
