How tight is to tight for regulator hoses to the 1st stage

If you have access to a little torque wrench, try about 8 Lbs.

Scubapro actually has a torque spec for port plugs, which I'm guessing would be appropriate for hoses, seeing as how they go in the same place. Its 44 inch/pounds, less than half of what you mentioned. 8 ft/lbs is actually pretty tight for a small fitting like this, I wouldn't go that high. Finger tight plus a little nudge, just like everyone's saying.
 
The hoses need to be attached tight enough so that they can't be unscrewed by hand but not "too tight." Hand-tight + tightening up the junction a smidge with a wrench works.

"How do I make sure that the reg is tuned properly?" :D
