Just list the amount of dives before you felt comfy going off on your own...

As usual. I will post mine..

I finished my openwater dives in Texas, flew to Cozumel, got my tanks for some shore diving and hit the water with my wife.. Just us two.
So.. for me. Right away.

Navigation is a breeze for me and the wife so its no biggy.

We normally go in at the pier by Casa Del Mar and have also gone in from the shore by Colombia (all in Cozumel)

not to mention all the local quarry dives we do and river cleanups.

Second post cert dive was just my girlfriend (at the time) and I (we both certified at the same time). It was only a local "diving quarry" so we felt capable. Some of the other local sites, I went with a group (not a DM) at first just to learn the site. Now, a couple of good questions/answers is all I really need to feel comfortable.

Immediately. I feel more safe diving my plan, than diving in a gaggle following a supposed DM.

Went for a dive in the quarry then took a trip to panama city.

I think I did around 15 training dives before I finally did a couple of recreational dives. But that's just because it worked out that way.

My wife, son-in-law and grandson all did leisure dives immediately following OW.

In fact, the only time I have ever been on a DM led dive was my trip to the Maldives where the entire week of diving was follow-the-leader. Everything else has been 'you're on your own'.

About an hour after I finished my OW class.

Right away ... my first post-OW dive was just me and one of the other "graduates" of my OW class.

That's pretty much how it works here in Puget Sound ... DM's don't generally take people out on guided dives here.

My first bunch of OW dives after my training were without DM's... I have never gone with a DM (in my limited diving career) where I wasn't training... there was a DM on a couple of the last dives I did in Kona, but we were not with them, we went off and did our own thing and she went with a photographer who was diving as his buddy.

Obviously, I had an instructor on our AOW dives but only on those 5 dives.
