How risky is diving?

I think the odds are pretty low that someone will get hurt while diving. That said, it's only as safe as the person diving. I've known some pretty stupid divers and have yet to see someone get seriously hurt. The truly stupid will always find creative ways to maim or kill themselves.

Oh, divers do get hurt. Fortunately not often, but much too often in pursuit of a recreational activity.
 
I don't have any real statistics, but I figure it this way.....anyplace I go that I need to bring my own air... Isn't forgiving if I make a mistake.

That being said, I think diving is safe as long as you follow the rules.

This thread got me wondering if there are more injuries with beginner divers or advanced (technical) divers. My wife is a skydiver, and she had told me that more injuries in that sport happen with the very experienced skydivers because they are trying to push the limits. Is there any similarity in scuba diving? I still consider myself a beginner and am not trained in any technical diving so am ignorant of the underlying mindset of a tech diver. Thanks
