Hi all,

My hubby just bought me the WP-DC21 housing for my G9, whoo-hoo!! :D It's quite an upgrade from what I was previously taking underwater, a Pentax Optio s5i, and a step 1 of getting a better camera setup (no strobes yet, but that's on my list).

I took it down last week, and one major problem - holy cow, it's bouyant! I know there's weights sold for it - any idea how much weight I need to add in order to get it neutral?

TIA!

The hardware store sells bolts and washers that screw into the bottom for a lot cheaper than Canon sells the weights. I got the bolt/washer setup for my girlfriend and she loves it.

The G-10 w/ Canon case takes an 8oz. weight set, would guess a similiar weight for the G-9--but I wouldn't pay the $25 bucks or so that Canon asks. A Home Depot solution "a-weights" here (sorry :eyebrow:). The tripod socket on the housing is a 1/4 x 20 thread (pretty easy to find) and looking for stainless steel would be a good idea. Yeah, nice step up! // ww

thanks for the hardware suggestion! Never actually thought about that. Are nuts/bolts really that heavy?? Guess I'll be making a trip to our resident home depot!

Av--Why do ya think they call 'em lug nuts?...:eyebrow: Actually to keep things from being too unwieldy you might try to find a weight you can put a 1/4" x 20 (threads per inch) short stainless bolt through, even if you had to drill a hole in the weight (which is basically what Canon does for $25. bucks or so). I'll bet some of the real DIY types on SB have a perfect solution. // ww

I recently used the Canon weight kit on a Canon G-10 camera with a Canon underwater case. It worked okay, but the bolt tended to work its way out (I tightened it from time to time), and over the course of several dives I realized I'd lost it.

Expensive reef litter.

Richard.

I love my A570 being bouyant--I know exactly where it is-@ all times......After using a negative bouyant S&S for almost 15 years, it's heaven to me.....& my wife says I hate change(s)....lol

I'm using an A720 in the canon housing, and like others I've used a stainless bolt & collection of washers to weight it down. I've arranged mine so it's just slightly positively buoyant - that way if I drop it, I know which way it's gone (although very slowly - it's barely buoyant).

Just be careful when using a bolt - make sure it's not too long! One fellow I know used too long a bolt, so when tightening the bolt it dug into the plastic housing under the tripod mount, cracking the housing & causing a flood the first time he submerged it. That must have hurt - he wrecked his camera AND his housing in one fell swoop!
