Hi all, I am living in Malaysia and been trying to get the course fees for my DM (PADI) and the price seems to varies from every dive intructors and operators, some includes books some doesn't etc...

So, how much is the fair value (course fees) for the following:
OW
AOW
RD
DM
AI
Instructor

Also, I am planning to go all the way till becoming an instructors, and plan to be a diving instructors as my second source of income (part time, during weekends). My another question is, how much does an instructors normally earns per month? For me, how often do you get paid to do something you love ...Be a diving instructor!!! But still....I have my bills to pay !!!

Thanks !!!

Howdy!

And welcome to SB - the biggest, the best, the fastest growing, and :D the friendliest!

Big questions for a new diver. Trying to finance your new sport? If you don't meet any Instructors here, you might try looking over the forums?

Sizing a photo for your profile or Avatar can be a challenge; I'm a fumbling amateur, but I get the job done, if you'd like any help? PM me if I can help you learn your way around; that is - click my username to the upper left, then follow the prompts to send me a "Personal Message." :thumb:

This is impossible to answer as every course is different and the price will reflect it. A good rule of thumb is that if it seems way cheaper than anything else in the same area, it probably isn't a good deal - you can get what you pay for in this sport. Ask questions, find out what is included - make sure you compare apples to apples and not apples to popsicles. There is no right price for any of these courses regardless of if they supply books, equipment or whatever.

This will vary wildly from nothing to a good wage. It will depend on where you are, how good you are, how experienced you are, what you can bring to the company that no one else can and how many other instructors there are out there applying for the same job.

I wouldn't quit my day job, especially when you first start out.

When looking for a DM and Instructor course I'd make sure that you are getting tons of diving with students & certified divers in. A quick DM course will not be beneficial to you in the long run.

It takes a minimum of six months to go from Open Water to Instructor and there are very very few people who can do it in that timeframe and be any good. Those that can are those that dive and participate in the industry virtually full time from day one...and there aren't that many who can afford to do that.
