Actually i can fit just about all of my tech gear in the dive caddy, but when i get to go vacation diveing in the caribbean wich is mostly Cayman i wouldn't need all of it, and if i did i could rent it. But what i can stuff into my carry-on is Kydex BP/wing, 3mm wetsuit, hood, booties, skins, board shorts and rashguard, Hollis F1 fins, can light, back up light, Keen Newport H2 slippers, couple t shirts, 1 jeans, shorts.
In my 2nd carry-on bag (my reg bag/man purse..lol) i have my regs, c-card, log book, computer, compass, lift bag, finger reel, tech reel, back up light, mask.

I leave the country alot since i have family and friends in Grand Cayman and Jamaica so i pack everything quite a few times a yr. Fortunetly they allow 1-2 check nbags, so if anything i will pack my going out cloths and dive knife/ shears. So i no longer have the worries about what if my gear doesn't make it, or renting gear im not use to...

I have a Dive Caddy so everything (BC, fins, reg, computer, wetsuit, boots, mask, etc.) on with me and then some (clothes, shoes, etc). Of course I leave the "oh s**t kit", dive knife, lights and that sorta misc. stuff in my check bag.

Usually I carry my regs, computer, camera, and log book. Sometimes I've gone as far as carrying my mask.

I carry the log because my cards are in it...one trip I decided to toss it in with my clothes, and THAT bag was late! Luckily I knew the owner of the operation, and she let me slide without the cards.

I HAVE on occasion shipped my gear from one UPS store to another (i.e. Hershey to Key Largo) Usually you just need to show proper ID and you can pick up your stuff. Pretty secure if you ask me...AND it's insured for the value YOU specify! (and with the prices some airlines are charging for extra bags, cheaper!)

I check all my dive gear. I'm not too worried about it; I pack it well and it's not that fragile. I frequently travel with a guitar that is very fragile and costs much more than dive gear. I carry that on whenever I can.

I carry my mask. I have a narrow face, and it's not something that if I had to rent, I'd have a good dive with.

For a cave and ocean diving trip, I carry on a roller plus a backpack. I've had the roller weighed, but never the backpack, so I pack accordingly. My backpack gets my regs (3), my can light, backup lights, camera and housing (a point and shoot) a hood to wrap the light head in, my computers, and my logbook/c-cards. My roller has my BP/W, my bathing suit, masks, reels, and my save a dive kit. Only dive gear getting checked is my boots, fins, wetsuit, and knife. My check in usually weighs 35 or so pounds, with my backpack being close to 30, and my roller being around the same.

I carry on stuff that's fragile, and stuff that's essentially irreplaceable. Thus my canister light heads go on (although TSA's bounced them once as being big enough to hit someone with!)

LOL. That's really amusing. If anyone has ever seen Lynne, you'd know that she isn't big enough to be intimidating regardless of *what* she was trying to bonk you with... LOL

I carry on my computer. I usually also carry my regs on because I'd be miffed if someone took them. I never take my can light with me on vacation because it's expensive, relatively fragile and it would suck big time if it got stolen.

What's also really important, jbtut, is that you lock your checked luggage. Either use a small lock to lock the zippers together or buy one of those belts with a combination lock. it won't stop them from opening it if they really feel there's a need but it will keep the baggage handlers out of your stuff. Never forget, the biggest thieves you're likely to encounter travelling (in my experience) are airline personnel themselves. Also, airlines systematically deny it and will take no responsibility for anything their people do.

I pack all my gear (logbook, wetsuit, dive light, bc, mask & snorkel, swim suit, boots and misc) except for fins (to big), knife and liquids in a carry-on suitcase - I have a large 'purse' which I put my camera (in housing), strobe, tray, computer, ccards, passport, couple of books, netbook, snacks. If my checked bag doesn't make it the only worry is fins and I can rent those - it's a lot of stuff to manage by myself - but it's better than not having my gear or renting gear or having to deal w/ the airlines.

Here's question - how can the airlines charge the $$ for our bags and then not be responsible for damage or theft?????

I am thinking about buying the dive caddy to see if I could get the size down a bit as I'm pushing the size limit w/ my carry on.

Happy travels,
A

You have obviously never traveled with a surfboard. The airlines (Quantas being a rare exception) all charge an arm and a leg for boardbags and but don't accept liability for surfboards. The airlines use the excuse that the odd size requires special handling. I've watched my boards being tossed on the conveyors just like anybody else's luggage. :shakehead::shakehead: It really gets irksome when the guys checking next to you checks his feeeking 40-50 lb golf bag that doesn't get charged.:depressed::depressed:

Back on topic. I am checking and packing gear today for a trip on friday evening. I carry on everything I can, in my mesh bag. Usually pack my bc with knife in the checked bag and carry on everything else.
