Hmm..
I always joke that I pour all my disposable income into dive gear.
I just realized it's not a joke, it's true..

How much? Wow... it really added up for me.

Mask, Fins, Snorkle, boots, OW class - $600
Zeagle Ranger BC, Zeagle reg, Dacor comp - $1200 (Comp was used)
AOW class - $200
Rescue class - $200
Exsposure suit - $200
UK light, knife & backup light - $350
2 tanks - $320
misc. gadgets - $500 (that is conservative)
Divemaster class - $400

That is almost 4k. Of course, if I wanted to just get in the water and rent the gear I could have stopped at $600 but I got the bug.

about 20 thousand dollars

Man, dive courses....numerous wetsuits....4 regs.....3 computers...Hartenberger dive light....2 bcds...fins....masks.....I don't know if I want to know...haha....$20,000 boat....It's bad...walking into a dive shop is like a junkie in a pharmacy. And that's just me. My ex-wife and three kids dive and have their own gear too.

I got OW certified August 9, 2003 and just a quick run through the list of my equipment in my head and I am already over $7k not including training (probably another $700 to $1000) or any dive trips/boats I have gone on. I have 2 reg sets, wetsuit, drysuit, 3 PST E7 tanks, aluminum 30 tank, computer, BP/W, reel, liftbag, SMB, 2 sets of fins, lights, 2 masks, o2 Analyzer, etc. Never mind the fact that I got rid of my Jeep Wrangler and got a Ford Expedition so that I could fit all of the gear in the car.

Approximately how much money did you guys spend to become fully equipped for SCUBA diving?

Your gear can cost as much as you want it to spend. If you shop around, you can get a decent, basic setup for under $1500 excluding/the cert.

Oh my gosh! I didn't realize it was so expensive. Makes me wonder why I always choose such expensive hobbies. Why can't I be satisfied with digging for old bottles or seaching for arrowheads or something cheap like that?

you can get a whole new set up for like 1500$ if you shop well, or you can get a used set up from different people or places for less. I dive doubles and stages so it is equipment intensive, and as a wise man once told me, you don't want to be diving crap stuff if your diving is extensive. I dive apeks regs, have a fartbag, 9 tanks, and a boatload of other stuff that cost me around 20K for it all plus training, this stuff aint cheap. I would not reccomend buying crap gear anyways even for the open water diver, your life is worth the price for gear that works....JD

Just think how fantastically boring that would be! That is unless you can do it 100' below the surface! Weaving pot holders is cheap. :)

Gary D.:
How much have you spent on the the other half?

Mine is simple: About 1K.
Alas I'm afraid I can't get my wife to dive. So I'm in for $40 for her mask/snorkel/fins, plus $50 for a snorkelers vest. She's quite happy to be on the surface watching the fishes.
