I was thinking of the number of inquiries I've been involved in regarding becoming a SCUBA Instructor or Commercial Diver. It got me to wondering how many people here on SB were involved in recreational or the commercial Diving Industry. For those that aren't, how many are interested in pursuing this at some point in-life?

I was but am no longer involved in commercial diving, part of a past life.

I did not see a choice appropriate to me.

I am paid as an instructor, but by no means is that piddling amount how I make my living. My cave instructor told me that he was a scuba instructor so that he could drink a better brand of whisky. That might be true of me as well, but it is more along the lines of offsetting the costs of my own personal diving.

Neither. I love diving and have no intention to babysit others. I am also to old for the commercial diving and love my body to much to be a"wreck" when I hit 50!

I teach and dive for the enjoyment of the sport and the hatered of money. I am sustained by other means but it seems I'm always immersed in some aspect of the industry.

Since you don't have an exact category for me I used the "commercial diver" one, it being the closest.

I don't fit any category, either. I'm a DM and assist with classes, and receive no pay.

I wouldn't consider myself a professional diver in any sense, I just love diving in every aspect. The only $ I get is tips for DM'ing, but I would GLADLY do it for no money whatsoever.

Diving is my passion...I live to dive!

I like this category as well, so include me as a DM that does it for the pleasure of the sport with little or no pay.
The moment you start getting paid you may lose sight of the reason you started diving to begin with.

As for ever becoming an instructor, I don't have the patients to teach anyone as dumb as me.. I would end up drowning the dummy.

I know it might be a " Big " surprise to some members, but I sell Scubapro and SubGear as a Scubapro Platinum Dealer.

As far as making a living, now that is a different question. We are taking about the SCUBA Biz. after all.
