Besides the obious uses of a snorkle it is a good indication of a divers abilities.
Dive leaders see the rantings of snorkle use as a posible indication that there might be another problem .
After all if you can't work out the simplisity of using a snorkle
how are your other skills.
OK DON'T PANIC GUYS ,divers who can use a snorkle and don't because of choice,Is another issue.
I,m talking pre dive assesment here in most cases entry level.

We had to know how to use our snorkel when I took OW including preforming a skill called "Waterworks". We had to dive down to the bottom the the pool, recover our mask and snorkel and clear both the snorkel and the mask by the time we reached the surface. However, I must admit that i totally don't use my snorkel when diving. Most of the times I leave it on the boat. Besides that I had a close encounter with a Great Barracuda who thought the sparkly silver reflective sticker was really pretty!

Since I started diving with the long hose, the snorkle has come off my mask, I do however have a foldup one that I keep in one of my thigh pockets on my dry suit, if I have to use it for a surface swim I slide it under my mask strap use it then stow it before I dive.

I stated snorkling with a bent narrow plastic tube with a rubber mouth piece.
My snorkle of choice these days is a flexi purge snorkle with silicone mouthpiece.
My daughter age 7 uses a kiddy snorkle of similar properties
THOSE old type el cheapos can realy be uncomfortable aswell as fatal.

steeldiver - out of curiosity, how can they be fatal?

I wear one, no saying that I like it, but I have used it a couple of times, so I decided to keep it on there.....:)

when i first started diving i had a nice pink one. i thought it was mandatory for scuba divers, it made me feel like SeaHunt.

it was a pain! it was cumbersome, it got tangled in my hoses, i dropped it several times. to stow it seemed wrong somehow.

then i learned that technical divers eschewed them. i tried diving without one and haven't used one since, and have never regretted it ( nor have i needed one).
surface swims are easier on your back
i suppose you might want one in your bag, in case of an emergency snorkel
event ( whatever that might be)

I always had a snorkle. Until recently I was using a really simple snorkel which I still had from my first mask (see profile pic :))

Now i have a new one.

I don't use it that often (when swimming on the surface i usually lie on my back) but I'm happy I got one just in case.
