In the class it's a must or the instructor makes you wear a stick so you don't ever forget it again. Other than that only if the surface is rough as it tends to drive me nuts.

I have almost 400 dives and not every dive use snorkel. I don't understand why... I always use the snorkel, of course, if I'm not diving a cave (here the snorkel is not usefull)...

I use my snorkle when I need to. That's about it. It's there *shrug*

I mastered the use of a snorkle at the age of 3 and have vary rarlly dived without one even on dives where i know i wont be using one.I feel a little naked with out it.

I take a snorkel out on the boat with me, but rarely take one diving. (for this I have gotten some smack from fellow divers). It rips out my hair if I leave it on my mask. I get nauseous snorkeling for too long, so I avoid it on surface swims before/after a dive.
If I dive, I dive, if I snorkel, I snorkel.

Snorkels are next to worthless for divers. A source of drag and a constant annoyance.

I have removed my snorkel in the months since I last posted on this thread...

I have come to the conclusion that snorkels are for snorkeling...they are totally incompatible with a long-hose set-up.

For my surface swims...my back is the best position anyway.

I haven't missed it for a second.
