I'm on my third mask right now, trying to find one that works.

So far, I've used the Atomic Frameless 2, the Scubapro Synergy 2 Twin, and the Tusa CEOS.

Out of the water, they all fit well. They suck my face like the critter in Alien, no air flow, good seal.

As soon as I get them in the water, they all leak at the nose. The window/lenses don't flood, but the nose fills up with water. I can still dive with them, but it's not optimal. I have a big head, and the Atomic was a size large. Didn't seem to make much difference. (Tried my wife's medium size Atomic, with the same result.)

Is there a method to finding a mask that works for you other than just buying mask after mask and trying them out in the water?

At the rate things are going, I'm going to have a lot of barely used masks on eBay by the time this process is over, I can tell.

You may want to examine the mouth piece you’re using, try a longer or shorter one, generally speaking if a mask seals really well on the surface the only change you’re making is putting the regulator in your mouth.

You inhale thru your nose with mask on your face to check it's seal. If it seals then, you are all set.

Do you have a mustache?

The FIRST.
My own mask never ever failed because I tried it on before buying even as a novice diver.

They all do seal fine out of the water. They just leak around the nose when I get them in the water.

The you probably have to adjust the straps better. They don't have to be too tight but they have to be a little snug.

What did you do during your scuba course?
