Because I do it alone. Most everyone that I have met go on trips like this with either a spouse or as a group. I truly have a unique situation.

It's not that unique though. Family thing aside so many backpackers do what you do - and I'd do it in a second, because I know I'll always meet some great people. At times it's even nice to be technically rather than emotionally entangled with your buddy.

It seems to me you've got some unusual perks and not much of a choice, anyway ;0) - - which leaves me wondering like a few others here if some specific worry is causing you to look for reassurance?

As for buddies just be sure to check them out - especially if the dives' a little demanding, and they're bringing unwieldly extra gear like huge cameras - it's going to affect your sitation too. I've had a few weird ones.

I've not got many dives, but some of the most memorable dives that I have done were with insta-buddies. Not because I wanted to but out of necessity (my wife doesn't dive). The work schedule that I work makes it hard to juggle family and diving.

Not unusual at all over here. Anytime I travel around the region my gear comes with me and I'll get a few dives in. Good tip though to get to know people / shops on a longer term, helps you get better buddies and get on better dives once they know your skills and are comfortable with you.

I have been married for 18 years with 2 kids (high school age). No my wife doesn't dive at all. I also go on these business/dive trips by myself as it is a business trip so she can't come. She is okay with me diving just so long as I do not spend the families vacation time doing it (which I do not). She is reasonable about it

This was going to be my only question. If you are taking time to go on vacation with the family, enjoy!

I am also the only one in the family who dives. I have 4 children from 4 to 21. This year I plan to take a week and do a livaboard, perhaps in Egypt. I want to dive everywhere we go. The family wants to (yeach) see the sights above the water :)

So we'll start doing both!

God bless,

God bless,

I have the exact same problem. They want (and deserve to) see the sights above ground. I just want to get wet. So I used just take a couple of mornings and do 2 tank dives. It is all about diving. I actually went to the Florida Keys and did't bring my dive gear!
So, you need to comprimise in life.

I hope you get a chance to dive the Red Sea, you know how good it is, don't you? Tell your family that you ned to see God's work undersea!

Take care, Dave
