Trust me, it's not that unique. People do this all the time.

Because I do it alone. Most everyone that I have met go on trips like this with either a spouse or as a group. I truly have a unique situation.

Except for the Asia part this is exactly my situation. I think it is very common.

Well, not that unique... I travel a lot for work as well, although I am jealous that you get the South Pacific whereas I mostly get the Caribbean!! :)

As suggested above, avoid insta-buddies. The first day or two, try to buddy with the DM, and assess / hang out with the other divers. Take a specialty if that gets you the DM. Email ahead that this is your preference... most dive resorts will accommodate.

If you *do* have to have a buddy, at least look for someone with their own equipment, prefereably a bit worn. And this is just common sense, but spend some extra time communicating with him/her how you expect buddies to interact.

The only thing dangerous I can see is my wife would KILL me for taking extra time away from home to have fun while she watches the kids! LOL

But my wife dives and would be really jealous of where you dive.

yes, it is wrong. wrong, wrong, wrong. i'd like to correct your horrible actions, and suggest myself as your buddy, and can you get your job to pay for that, too? :D

How about you carry my bags? Just kidding, NOT!

Thanks for all of your comments. I am going to stay the course and do some diving in 2 weeks in Yap when I come back from China. I am at peace when I dive, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Get your Rescue Diver and you’ll feel more comfortable about possibly being the senior buddy when diving with an insta-buddy.

agreed, that is my next step. I have been doing one class per year.
A couple of months ago I received my Nitrox. I need to sign up for CPR before I take that Rescue class next year.

not unique in any way, my company has sites in asia and i know quite a few people who do exactly what you are doing. it's a lot more common than you think..
