I used Bare T-100 Polar Extreme (thinsulate with nylon outer covering) and 100g micro fleece on a 41 degree dive for about 40 minutes. I wasn't toasty warm but I was more than comfortable. Trilam suit BTW.
Your best option is to layer. If nothing else this gives you the option to switch something out if you are too warm or cold.

400g Thinsulate undies for the entire range. When it gets close to 40, I will be plugging in an electrical heater.

Bare CT200 is the way to go. Perfect fit with flex panels. Easy on Easy off Easy underwater.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll be picking up some thinsulate very soon.

ChrisA:
You say "fleece". I'd say the 200 gram thickness and some polypro under that. With thinsulite you can use less thickness. 40 to 55 is a big range, I don't think 200 fleese wuld do well in 40F water. My experiance only goes to 50F

It's just like wetsuits, everybody is different. I used a 200 gr fleese undergarment and was comfortable last weekend with 38 F temps, not hot, not cold. Just right.

You and your electric heating again.

Yes I am jealous.

But what would have happened if you leaked badly or even flooded the suit, at depth?

Walnuts would turn to peanuts.

Jeesh...and I dive wet with a triweight tropical dive skin under a 5mm wetsuit, hood booties and gloves...nice and toasty even in 45 degree water...it's just when you get out into the breeze that your cajones crinkle...got a 7mm semi-dri seems to help a lot..
