If I was in distress I can guarantee I'd have a better way of showing it that putting my mask on my forehead!
Panicked or distressed divers will often reject equipment and the mask is one of the things to go when at the surface...

Because so many have been taught to recognize this as a distress sign you should not do it unless you are in distress.

But there is another reason.. a mask on the forhead has a tenuous perch and can be easily knocked off. A mask under the chin is ok unless you are using a necklaced back up regulator... in which case you want the mask on the head turned around backward.... this backward facing position is very secure and even if you were to have the mask drop off backwards it would be caught by your regulator and hoses instead of dropping forward into the drink.

I wear it around my neck... even at work. ;)

I usually leave my mask on my face when I'm in the water. Some of us poor people with bad eye sight need to find the boat. Someone already mentioned that.

As for the mask on the forhead being sign of distress. Well, it CAN be ONE of the signs of distress. If that is all you're looking for to determine if a diver is in distress, you need to get your head out of..., well, you know where it is.

I know a professional diver that keeps her mask on her forehead on the surface when she is relaxing and waiting for the boat to come pick her up. You can tell she isn't in distress, she is probably napping. Heaven help you if you disturb her about having her mask on her forehead.

I only find myself asking more questions. I wear mine around my neck if I remove it while at the surface for some reason.

It seems to me that it would be as likely to get knocked off if you were wearing it backwards on your head or pushed up on your forehead.

How is it more secure being worn backwards? (I'll test it this weekend - while standing on the boat).

Lacking any test results that may prove otherwise, I think the most secure place for the mask is around the neck, for obvious reasons. With the exception of attaching it to BC or something else. Neck also provides easy access to it

How you wear it is a trade off between comfort and surface condition requirements. In glass like surface conditions you could probably hold it with your finger tips and not loose it. In rough conditions placing it in your forehead, backwards, or in your hand your chances of loosing it increases.

In a calm surface if you wear it or hold it in places other than your neck, you will be more comfortable, but more likely to loose it if surprised by an unexpected wave or other seldom occuring event.
Getting in the habit of wearing it like this may cause you to inadvertenly do so in rough conditions where it should be more secure, such as a surf beach entry.

In calm or rough surface conditions your mask around the neck will be more uncomfortable, but more secure. This may lead to the habit of getting use to wearing it on your face. In my opinion this is the best location for it, even on surface, unless situation demands otherwise.

Choices - Choices.

As Uncle Pug pointed out, consideration must be given to specific situtations. In the event the mask around the neck interferes with your regulators, regulator security and access obviously take precedence over mask placement considerations.

Thanks Uncle Pug for your answer. It makes sense to wear them around your neck so you don't lose them. I'll try to get in that habit. But then I'll probably start pulling my ski goggles down around my neck and become the laughing stock of the ski resort! :(

...for that answer.

I wear mine backward on my head not around my neck.
And it works for ski goggles too... looks really cool in either setting.

Hmmm, I'll have to think about that. Seems like something the younger crowd would do! LOL
