I am honestly surprised there is not a more formalized networking platform for divers. You would think with 6 million divers globally there would be a more centralized way of connecting likeminded divers rather than going directly to a LDS.
Though many people avoid Facebook, it seems to me to be the best place to find buddy groups. This site is good too, but seems that Facebook buddy groups have a bit more regular interaction.

You can check if your local dive shop organizes trips. I also look at other dive shops' "travel" tab on their website, even those in other states.

I've always traveled solo for all my dive trips. And I except for the first trip stayed at a dive resort. Sometimes I met people to hang out with, but that was the rare occasion as opposed to the norm. I am going on my first liveaboard with my local dive shop to Raja Ampat, but then staying on at a land resort for 10 days on my own. Its great to meet people, but I'm fine being alone. I'd love to share a room, though.

I travel solo, which is the main reason that liveaboards work out so well.
