Going on for 2 months now of my new health drive (New Year intentions)... packed in the fags and cut down on the beers but seem to be piling on the weight. Gone up from 10 stone to 11 and a half!

Not a gym person and far too cold / wet / windy to go out running up here... any suggestions other than cutting back on the pies?!

Won't go to the gym OR cut back on the pies? Not giving us much room to help. ;)

Get a Russian kettlebell and do 15-30 minutes per day of whole body weightlifting. See http://www.dragondoor.com/ . This is my mainstay, though I also substitute the gym a couple days per week to swim laps or use the eliptical trainer. In nicer weather I go for long bike rides of 30-80 miles, maintaining a pedalling cadence of 70-80 rpms (recumbent bike).

Do SOMETHING. Brisk walks or walking up and down stairs is also good. At the very least, do one of these things 3 times per day for 10 minutes each.

Scotland has many good icerinks....as does Canada...
I find that a good hockey workout 3 times a week keeps you in very good shape....find a pick-up game, and even if you have never skated, you can learn quickly....
Keeps the lungs and legs up to par....

Only drink on the weekends. After dinner get up and do something.

My wife wanted a bigger closet in our house. So that is my winter project. If I have a beer with dinner then I have no ambitions to get off of my duff and work. You will be surprised how much work you can get done in 2 hours. Then it is off to the shower, relax a little and go to bed. No time to snack after dinner.

How big is a stone any way. Is this where the American expression, "work your stones off" comes from???? :lol2:

think so! a stone's 14 pounds in weight.

Thanks for advising what a stone is! I have always thought it was 17 pounds. I guess now I can feel better, just have to start working off those stones!

I drink rum and coke rather than beer.. beer is heavy and fattening unless I am diving every weekend. When I'm forced down to every 2 or 3 weeks (weather dependant) I mix it up with weight training, walkin, watching NASCAR, outside work, etc, you name it.

watching NASCAR

How many calories do you burn off doing that? :D
