Use a hard suitcase, or take it carry-on onto the plane. As everyone here already mentioned, It's the zip you need to protect.
 
One of the few times an airline lost my luggage (and I used to travel fairly frequently) I had checked two bags on a direct flight from Atlanta to New Bern NC. I am not sure how they managed to lose my drysuit on a direct flight but they did. Luckily I was getting in a day earlier than I needed it, and it got there LATE the next day. My suggestion - plan the diving later in your itinerary in case your checked baggage gets there after you, or see if there is way you can carry it on, if you don't have any extra time in your schedule.
 
I've been carrying mine on as a 'jacket'. I figure if they challenge me on it I'll just wear it for the first hour.
