I'd stay for starters, meeting several board members in a group of 2 or more the first time you meet wouldn't be a bad idea.

Alex,

You have a valid point IMO. On the other hand, that's what this board is for. I've dived with several people from this board, and I've not met many of the ones that I share opinions with, but I tell you what, from previous experiences, I would dive with someone I don't know from here before I dive with anyone I don't know from anywhere else any day of the week and twice on Sunday. We're really a tight group here, as close to an extended family as you can get.

Rick

two issues there:

1. above-water: i usually go to popular dive spots, where there
are other people around anyway, plus i talk to the person
i am meeting before hand. i wouldn't go out on a boat with
someone the first time i met them, alone, for example, not so
much safety (though that's valid) but mostly personality
stuff. idea is, i can bail at any time.

2. below-water: you just have to dive with them and see if
they are a safe diver and a good buddy (not necessarily the same thing).
if you don't like what you see, you can make adjustments for the duration
and not dive with them again.

i must say that i have yet to meet a Scubaboard diver
i wouldn't dive with again. must be my dumb luck.

Everybody I have dived with here on Scubaboard I would dive with again. Like my signature line says...there are divers then there are ScubaBoard divers. The divers here are serious about diving, safety and having a good time. Most are more than willing to share their experiences with you...for example: If you dive with me and ask me a question, it is to my benefit to answer in a way to encourage you to dive better...that equals a better dive for both and more bottom time!
I personally haven't had much luck outside of ScubaBoard save for one buddy.
And since you are Miami based, you have a better pool of divers to choose from than from say Arkansas (not that there is anything wrong with divers from Arkansas, just less).

Boy, do I know how you feel...! Your profile doesn't say how many dives you have logged, though, so I'm not completely clear where you coming from...?

Not sure where this came from: "...how do i know somebody is not gong to hit me over the head for my stuff or worse." Maybe you're talking about trips, or shore dives...?

If you're talking about trips, you go with groups - best way to deal with this fear, as the worst I've ever had from an assigned roomie was when he borrowed my nail clippers and hair brush without asking, then stole my last six pack. He was also too green to be on that boat, so I just privately refused to buddy with him; I got a good one, and someone who owed the leader a favor suffered. {Yes, he was from Arkansas.}

If you're talking about meeting for shore diving, I have no experience, but I'd say about the same - organize groups.

Now my From-Hell experiences have been when I traveled alone to dive, Florida Keys, Catlaina Is CA, etc on day boats. Being a singular, I generally get the leftover boat-pick no one else wanted, and it's been a hoot. 2 times in one week, with different operators, I dived on the S.Grove, only to have each of my assinged buddies show me 500 psi left at 80 feet. Damn! What if I needed air? Dive aborted early so we can get back on my 1500 psi. No refunds. And I have other stories.

If you can find a good, compatible buddy and arrange to go together, that's great, but I can't. People here don't travel much, much less travel & dive, so most trips I go alone.

I hope for the best, never dive without a pony, and if the assigned buddy turns out to be an air hog, I ask them to stay above me a few feet at all times - to slow them down a bit.

Many of us have horror stories to tell. After 30+ years of thought and experience, I came to this conclusion: either marry one or make one and raise it properly.

Diving with my 13 year-old daughter is the best dive experience I have ever had.

indeed... but when neither is an option, you have to dive with Simbrooks...

it can be done, but it's just not pleasant

Or Andy :D

well my wife doesn't dive and I don't think they make a wet suit small enough for my 6 mos. old son. That's a joke don't call HRS on me please. I"m going to take all you guys advise I only have 30 dives but i hope to double that number I got cert last summer. well I'll look out for your next dive trips and hope i have the days off. I got one horror story I go lobstering one night with two other guys i know I assume(that's my first mistake) their cert. well one wasn't and was diving with gear that wasn't serviced in years. he had a massive air leak and the buddy system was a foreign language to him. It's a good thing we where diving near the rocks so are max depth was 10 feet. but trust me I"M not diving with him again.
