Check this out http://www.padi.com/padi/en/kd/padicourses.aspx

To qualify for training as a PADI Open Water Instructor, you must:

* PADI Assistant Instructor certification or be an instructor in good standing with another training organization for at least six months ( check with a PADI Course Director or PADI Office for qualifying credentials.)
* Hold a dive certification for at least six months
* Have 60 logged dives that include night, deep and navigation dives
* Proof of CPR training within the last 24 months
* Medical clearance signed by a physician
* Want a fun and exciting career!

Get your check book and prepare to spend $$$$$$$$ for the Crew Packs, and DVDs.

Dont forget about your Gear!

"is it possible to take one of these 6 month program and truly be ready to teach people and make money doing it? "

Quick answer is NO!:D

Hmmm...let's see - 6 months?

6 months at an average of 3 dives a day...+/- 550 dives
The rest of the time studying and helping with pool sessions.

Yes it's possible. Is it likely?

I doubt it.

Mike, welcome to the Board.

Yes, it is possible to take a 6 month course to become an instructor.

No, you will not truly be ready to teach people.

No, you will not likely make money as a recreational dive instructor.

Most of us become instructors because we love to dive, not to make money.

My suggestion is for you to first get certified and have some fun diving.

make money yes, make a living to raise a family on.......NO WAY>>>>>>>>

if I was single though...............................................

I look at what people make diving for a living and Im baffeled. How do they survive? Pure passion I guess.

Could he make money if he was a course director?

PADI Co-Founder John Cronin once observed, “PADI Course Directors are the crème de la crème.”

PADI Course Directors are instructor trainers who conduct PADI Instructor Development Courses and other instructor-level training, holding the highest and most respected rating in recreational scuba diving. Those who join this elite group of professionals pass through a stringent screening process that examines their experience and training just to get into the demanding, intense two week Course Director Training Course. Rise to the top. Reach for the PADI Course Director rating.

Prerequisites include:

* Renewed teaching status PADI Master Instructor for at least six months.
* Conduct all PADI certification courses and experience programs using methods consistent with PADI Standards and philosophy as outlined in the PADI Instructor Manual.
* Exclusively use the complete PADI System of diver education including all appropriate PADI training materials.
* Certified as a PADI IDC Staff Instructor
* Certified as a current Emergency First Response Instructor.
* Experience working with a PADI Center or Resort.

What do you call a scuba instructor that breaks up with his girlfriend?

homeless.

sorry, that was in poor taste. some sensitive soul told me that one at my last break-up. It cheered me up a little.

Catherine did you breakup with your boyfriend? Is he now homeless?

What if the Girlfriend was staying at his Mansion... should SHE be homeless LOL?
