as far as cold water regs, it depends. you really do not need a cold water reg especially just starting out.

Would you elaborate why the starting out does not need a cold reg diving in a cold water ? I'm not picking but as a newbie as well would be glad to understand why.

I would understand that if you are experienced and you know how to inhale slow and having proper weight not "sitting" on the BC button but I cannot see the other way

to OP: You need an environmentally sealed one. Check those manufactures that are available locally and you can service. I believe almost every brand has a cold water reg. Here I see mostly apekses, aqualungs and scubapros.

because unless he is ice diving or diving from dec-march off NJ, he does not need to spend the extra money on the sealed regs. The shops don't even rent sealed regs up there. Plus they will be diving shallow and hence the water is warmer. You can save your money and get good balanced regs. Like I said I have the Dive Rite RG3000s non sealed for my doubles and both my deco bottles. I use them for all my diving, I do not do ice diving but do dive from May-Nov, in NJ with them.

I have the titan lx supreme and been in water as cold as 42 deg. and has worked perfectly. It breathes very easy and all around a good reg.

Today is April 13 and the water around here Central NY is in the mid-30's.

I would absolutely recommend a sealed reg. Things won't get all the way up to "cold" (50's) for another couple of months.

You can dive a non-sealed reg right now if you're both careful and lucky, but a new diver can't count on either.

The OP doesn't have doubles. If you get a freeflow you can shut down the bad side and let it thaw. The OP can't. You can also breathe on one side and inflate your wing from the other, which the OP also can't do.
