hi all
how did you all get into scuba diving,
me i used to live on a kibbutz in the negev desert in israel, on and off for 4 years, on my first trip there i worked on the kibbutz for 8 months, i got there with no money but had a desperate wish to become a scuba diver, i didn't buy any soda, potato chips nothing, every shekel i earn't in the 8 months went to pay for my PADI open water and advanced open water courses

whilst traveling in australia i had a friend who had a nut allergy, she picked up someone elses beer by mistake, and went into annefelatic shock {spelling ??} she's shown me how to give her addrenalin and with a bit of CPR she was OK'ish by the time the ambulance had gotten there, this scared the hell out of me so i decided perhaps i should go and do the medic and rescure diver course, so that in theory if i had to do it again i'd know what to do
that's a little about me,

Good to see you posting so well already!

This is a subject more apporpriate for New2Scuba forum, so I have asked a Moderator to move it there for better coverage.

:D

Moved from Introductions & Greets forum.

hi there submariner
may i ask, the picture in your avatar, what is it ?? it looks like a whale where is it from i'm looking for charactures to make up a tattoo i have an aboriginal designed shark
i had planned a shark, a dolphin and a fish, nose to tail swimming around the world
3 images with the world in the center, seeing your avatar perhaps there might need to be room for more
would it be too cheaky for me to ask if i could possibly use the image in a tattoo and perhaps if you have a bigger picture of the avatar
thanks

Got into scuba diving when I moved into a household of scuba divers at university, they were all talking about diving in the pub every night (yep we were in the pub every night.. typical students!) ad it sounded really cool. Started doing the BSAC course with the uni but it was taking a long time, my instructor was a padi dm and recommended I go to the red sea to do my open water course in december, it was certainlywarmer there at that time of year than in the uk!

In 1999, while living in Europe, fate had sent me on a trip to Hawaii (long and funny story...for some other time). While there, I snorkeled Molokini and was sooo sad that I couldn't get closer to all the action and beauty. After I returned from my trip another friend asked if I wanted to go to Egypt on a Nile Cruise with her. I said only if we go to Hurgahda for a week too - so I could get certified. And that's what I did. My first years of diving I didn't get to do much because I was land locked. Now, living here.....I feel empty when I can't go.

What in the beer triggered her allergy?

For some reason I just always fancied it, but I thought you'd have to be absolutely super fit to do it. So for about 8 years I kept thinking "One day...".

Then at the end of August I though sod it and phoned up my LDS, who totally put my mind at rest. And I haven't looked back!

Now just logging dives till I'm profficient enough to do the Rescue Diver.

by accident, myself and a friend were on our way to work and he wanted to check out a surfing shop, so i went along purely because he was driving, we walked straight past the surfing shop and into the dive shop. I had less than no interest when my friend said ooh come on lets get certified, i only perked up when he said that he'd pay the deposit for me! What else was i gonna be doin!!

5 years later, we're both instructors! :D

Wanted to do it for a long time, never had the $$/time. Last year, my gf (now fiancee) and I went down to visit her Dad in Key Largo for the holidays and my OW course was my present. Best present I ever got!

Rubbachicken, I'd hazard a guess that Submariner's avatar is a Native American/First Nations representation of an Orca, almost certainly one of the tribes of present day Washington State or British Columbia.
