I'm thinking about buying a housing and strobe for my 10D. My first choice would have been an Ikelite housing, but someone told me to get a Sea & Sea housing because he's seen lots of Ikelite housings leak.

So, if money is no object (not true, but I've always wanted to say it), which housing would you get--Ikelite, Sea & Sea, or...?

Ah, the tough questions.

I've had Ike's for a long time and never had a problem with them. Excellent value for money, sturdy, clear so you can see everything, fantastic customer support, wide range of features and bits to suit your needs.

Sea & Sea's new models may be great, I haven't used one lately.

Subal, Aquatica and Nexus at least, I think, make housings for this camera.

Check out www.digideep.com for housings that are available. Check out www.wetpixel.com in the dslr section as there are several 10D shooters there. I can't think of who here shoots one....

Sea & sea only brought 50 housings into the States, so finding some used ones might be a little difficult and I do now know of any new ones available.

The Ike is a possibility and you might be able to get one new. I also have a customer who might be interested in selling his Subal rig. I know it only has about 50 dives on it, but I think he wants to upgrade to a 5D.

Thanks, but I prefer to buy a new one. I can get a new Ikelite housing for my 10D from a few places. I might want to get a housing for my wife's 350D instead, then upgrade my camera and get a housing for it later. That way I can see how hers floats first. :)

I've got the Rebel XT as well. Takes great pictures. I'm thinking the 5D willl be my next camera. It might be a good idea to get a housing for her camera with 2 strobes, which you can use when you upgrade your camera, the strobes that is.

Yeah, and with her camera I could use a Canon EF-S 10-22 lens. It's a good excuse to pick one up anyway. :)

I'm not sure what I want to upgrade to. I'm starting to hear lots of rumors about Canon's future camera releases. I may just wait and see what happens. Heck, my 10D is less than 2 years old. I'm sure it's got a few shots left in it. What ever I do upgrade to will probably have a full-frame sensor though.

I got the new Sea & Sea 350D housings in a few weeks ago and they are fantastic. Very compact, excellent controls (as always with Sea & Sea). The did give this housing dual bulkheads unlike the D70 housing. I have a D70 housin in rental, and this new 350D housing is a significant improvement all around..especially the size factor.

I like the Ikelite housing. When I started buying underwater gear, I did a lot of research. Here's what I discovered...

-Pretty much any major brand housing will work to keep the gear dry. I mean, for the cost, that's what they do. So the differences come down to personal perferances.

-Ikelite, with the clear housing allows you to see if there is any problem. In fact, when I bought my first Ikelite, it leaked the first time I used it...not because of the housing but because I didn't install the O-ring properly. It was completely my fault, but if it wasn't a clear housing, I would have flooded the thing and destroyed the camera.

-I also considered being underwater and trying to remember what all those controls are for. I know my gear, but working underwater with a camera enclosed in a opaque housing just adds to the difficulty. With the Ikelite, I can see the controls more clearly.

-Ikelite's line of accessories is just great.

-I have found their customer service to be top notch. On a recent expedition, while my camera was being hoisted out of a cavern, it banged pretty hard against the cavern wall. one of the lighting mounts cracked. When I got home, one E-mail to Ikelite and a quick call and three days later the replacement bracket was in my mailbox.

Here's one of the photos I took that day
