It was one of those, "Do I actually remember how to dive" mornings. Surprise conditions when I ran by the beach last night after work. My goodness this is flat and clear. So a late call to Ken, a student in need of some navigation work, resulted in a plan to meet at Deerfield Beach at 8am.
During the evening the wind had picked up, and I was anticipating another blow out, but when we go to the beach the wind was still light from the south. A little swell had built, but not much. We dove, the viz was great, yadayadayada. A baby nurse, a momma nurse (gotta love that white hose they wear), big and little morays, a very cool pipefish, and lots of shells. The reef ledges are "growing" as the sand drops out from under, and the result is a buch of productive shell beds. Ken bagged a righteous helmet shell.
But the shocker of the day was the raw sex in the sand. At first I thought I was looking at a black plastic bag flapping around, and then it occurred to me that I had just turned into a voyeur. The blag sea slugs were out in the sand and under ledges doing the nasty. Not just one (err, well two) but we came across numerous slugs being frisky. These were big dudes too (no Viagra comments please), not the little fingernail sized nudis we usually see. I had to come home and take a cold shower!
Sooo, if the conditions hold out and you have the chance for a beachdive this week, take a camera. I hear you can sell this stuff on ebay - tho you'll get a better price if you dub some music and groaning to it...
BTW: the water is chilly (maybe 70-72?), but the viz was good (35-50 feet).
Cheers
