So, Pete (Netdoc) and I were talking amongst ourselves the other day, and trying to figure out what some of the many things wrong with the scuba industry is, and why the lethargy. I don't think it's really unemployment, after all, it went from 5% to 10%, so 95% of the people who were employed are still employed. So, we don't know if it's the price of fuel, lack of knowledge about Dry Tortugas, or general malaise to diving. So we're going to try a special to see if we can get off center on local diving trips.

Pete and the Scuba Board Staff, along with the crew of the Mighty Vessel Spree, are inviting you to come along with us to the Dry Tortugas National Park and Northern Ecological Reserve for Presidents Day Weekend. To sweeten the pot we will give a 3rd day of diving for the price of a 2 day weekend trip.

This trip will depart Friday night, February 12th. Boarding is at 8 PM. We will return to the dock on Monday, February 15 at about 1:30. 12 dives will be offered, unless the crowd opts to visit Fort Jefferson. Fort visits are always done on a majority rules vote. Included in the charter are all linens, soda, beer wine, nitrox (Pete will be on hand to provide nitrox instruction for those who need it, PM him for class pricing), food, snacks, camaraderie, and Pete's and my smiling faces. We will do a double on the Vandenberg on the way home.

The catch is that your deposit must be in by December 31st. The boat will only go if it's full. December 31st will give us time to cancel if there is truly ambivalence in our divers, and allow the rest to go find another place to dive.

How does it work? Go to the Spree Expeditions website (Spree Expeditions M/V Spree SCUBA Diving Dry Tortugas). Click on the link that says 2010 schedule. The February window will pop up, and you will see the buy now link for the trip. Click the Buy Now and follow the instructions. When you get to the payment page, put your ScubaBoard name in the remarks section. Again, you don't have to pay it all up front, you are welcome to put down a deposit in accordance with the terms and conditions. Final payment is due in the middle of January. If you book your wife, son, or ex-mother-in-law as a dive buddy, and they aren't a member of ScubaBoard, put your board name in the remarks section anyway.

Let me see if I can answer some of the questions you will have. I don't have the weather forecast right now for that weekend. We will make a weather call before noon on the day of the trip departure. I always recommend trip insurance for those flying in from somewhere else. If we don't go due to weather, we always refund you in full. Trip insurance will cover your airline fees. And, even if the weather sucks, you're still in Key West, right? We call (usually) in anything over 4-6 foot seas, depending on direction. Water temps will be in the low to mid 70's. We should see all of the usual reef fishies, including Goliath Grouper, blacks, reds, etc. etc. We are not a spearfishing boat, we don't have the permits, and fishing is closed in the sanctuary anyway. We maintain the boat "girl clean", meaning the heads are cleaned 5 times per day at a minimum, as well as me cleaning them every time I go in. There is lots of information available on the website regarding the particulars of diving from the Spree.

NetDoc, Melanie, and I hope to see you on the Spree. Happy Holidays.

Frank
