What do the hose protectors on the LP hose connecting the second stage hose to the 1st stage protect against?
It looks like it mostly keeps the hose from bending in that area thus reducing the strain on the hose-hardware joint.

My 2nd stages have them but my new LP inflator hose does not.

On a related note, I have another LP hose (busted) that does have a protector on it but I could not figure out a good way to get the thing off the first hose and onto the second hose. Any suggestions?

The stubborn hose protector is just a simple tube of vinyl.

yes, cut it off and throw it away

Hose protectors stiffen the metal/hose junction near the first stage where alot of breaks/stress occur.
Some people, myself included, think they're useful. Others, like the previous poster, evidently don't.

Your choice. Oh, and soaking them in hot water will help when removing/installing.

I agree with Mech as to their value, Liquid dish soap helpd the move on the hose and there is a tool available that threads onto the hose and makes installation easy, ask your LDS...
