I've bought my regulators, Scubapro Mk16 with a Scubapro R390 second stage and an R390 Octopus. The dealer has set them up and installed a hose for my drysuit.

I now have my BC (Mares Dragonfly Aria), which came with an LP hose. The LP hose has a threaded connector with an 'O' Ring on it and the first stage has a blanking screw with an Allen head.

I have two questions:-

1) Can I (should I) just remove the blanking screw and install the BC hose, or do I really need the dealer to do this? I can't see why it would be a problem, but I know my life depends on this gear. It also depends on my car brakes and I'm happy enough doing them, but I have experience.

2) Two of the ports on the Scubapro first stage are High Volume Ports (marked HVP on the body). To what should they be connected, the second stage and octopus or the BC and Drysuit hose? The dealer has connected them, but not necessarily where I would have expected.

Actually I have a third question. How much use is the PADI equipment Specialist qualification in understanding this? I'm a reasonably competent engineer, and I have mechanical experience working on my cars and repairing clocks. What I lack with dive gear is detail knowledge of how it works.

Happy Christmas to everyone and safe diving for 2004

No problem, you want your 2nd stages on the "high volume" ports.
Save the ""normal" volume for the inflators, you don't want to have "turbocharged" inflators.
How does your shop have them set up?

Thanks, Bob. That was the answer I was expecting as I assumed the HVP would be for the 2nd Stage regulators. The shop seems to have connected the drysuit inflator hose to one HVP and left the other blank for the BC. This is why I noticed the HVP stamp on the port, because it's not in use, and I wanted to know what it was for.

I'll double check on Thursday (they've been sent off to Santa) and kick up a fuss if they are wrong. This is why I'm worried about this gear, it's survival critical and I want to understand that everything is RIGHT.

Thanks for the helpful (and quick) answer.

Answer to question 1) Sure why not... eventually you'll either have to swap a hose or something without a shop handy anyways, or you will just want to do it for some reason. The thing to remember, is only hand tight, and then just a smidge with a wrench, not much, just a tad... I go hand tight, and then just tighten a tad more, usually I don't even make it turn. You just don't want it comming unscrewed on it's own, the o-ring will keep the air in, and water out.

Question 2) According to SP that is a high flow port (we already knew this) so DEFFINATELY connect the 2nd stages to this... have a BC/Drysuit with higher volume air would be bad, esspecially if an inflator got stuck.

Question 3) Dunno never taken the class, but I can tell you I've picked up quite a bit either from this board or from other places... I belive part of that class is supposed to cover some of how maintenance is done on the gear, but doesn't train you to do it. I think it's more just for information than anything... there are many books availalbe on the subject including one by Airspeed press, which actually teaches you how to tune, repair, and maintain regs... and in Advanced, and/or Rescue more of how regs and gear works is covered, I belive it's rescue talks more about how it works, so you know more about equipment failures.
