My weekend run on the Broadwalk from Hollywood Beach to Dania Beach found a good clean-up effort underway. Sand still covers much of the Broadwalk, but Angelo's didn't loose power and is still cranking out the best pizza around. The beaches are definitely re-shaped.
Vegetation damage was evident, with a few Australian Pines and Sea Grapes taking the brunt of the storm. The temporary plastic walls in place for the Broadwalk reconstruction turned out to be a blessing as they offered an effective shield to water and sand. This was a surprise, but on inspection, the interlocking system revealed their substantial stability. The drifting sand against the temporary walls reminded me of how snow fences work in the Great Plains.
The North Hollywood Beach Park lost many trees and fences, and appears to be closed. Dania Beach is closed until Tuesday (estimate) due to a downed power line. A few boats in the marina went under, but most rode out the storm in good fashion.
Consensus of the lifeguards is that the milky color of the water and poor visibility will remain as long as the sand pump is busy in the area with beach re-nourishment. With that in mind, it will probably be best to scrub any plans for beach dives along this strip of coast for the next month or so.
