Tenerife Canary Islands
Hello to one and all from Sunny, but today slightly windy Tenerife.

Have been living diving and running a dive centre here for the last five years.

Any questions about diving in the Canary Islands, specifically Tenerife and El Hierro please ask.

Yes, I have a few. As I mentioned in a post in another thread you started (on the videography class), I've had an invitation to travel to Rota, Spain, and Tenerife. I don't think I could make the trip due to the short notice (we'd leave in 10 days).

However, I'm curious. I realize the Canary Islands are politically Spanish. However, do you consider them an African dive site in terms of geography and association with the seven continents? I've seen them listed as both African and European in dive-related web sites. TIA.

Just took a look at your web site. You mention that Jacques Yves Cousteau's son dove there. Was it Jean-Michel or Philippe? I'm an old friend of Jean-Michel's, having worked with him off-and-on since the mid 1970's. However, I suspect it was probably Philippe. I received an e-mail today from Dr. Richard C. Murphy, former V.P. of The Cousteau Society, who just returned from diving in the Canary Islands.

Hi Again we seem to be chassing each other around the forum...ha ha!

To the best of my knowledge you are right on the Cousteau link.

In terms of the Canary Islands politically they are Spanish....although a lot of the admin here seems to have an African Influence.....it's mannana plus....!!! In terms of dive site listing the African/European bit is more down to website software than than anything else. Most websites seem to list by population or size rather than type of diving. Personally I would put The islands in the same catagory as Malta and Gozo in the Med from a scenery perspective.... but with more fish!

In terms of diving the volcanic origins of the islands mean that what you see on land is what you get underwater. Just about every dive here (Tenerife) you can multi level on. You get some very rapid drop offs most of the diving we do is no more than 300-400m from shore....go another 100m off shore and you are down to 60-70m .... and then its start to drop off even more. Between Tenerife and La Gomera (next island west) you are looking at a couple of kilometers depth!

In terms of differences between the islands the oldest islands are Lanzarote and Feuertventua followed by Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera the El Hierro and La Plama if memoory serves. Both La Palma and El Hierro at about 7M years old have the most rugged coastlines, both above and below the water.

Hope this helps
