What are the advantages/ disadvantages of crossing the shoulder straps vrs straight. About to rig a BP for smaller diver.
Crossing them will bring the straps closer to the neck.

Regards

The advantage of that is potentially keeping them from digging into the arms.

I used to dive with them crossed, then switched due to an instructor who did not like them that way and since there was no detectable difference for me, I never switched back.

If I noted anything, it was that the straight straps are a little easier to get into.

I suspect most men would not like the straps crossed, it tends to drop the plate lower and bring the straps in tighter, closer to the neck, good for people with small shoulders where the straps might tend to slip off. When I cross my straps they cut into my neck.

Crossing the straps will keep them from digging into the upper arms, and make them ride in the natural "hollow" between the shoulder and the base of the neck, instead of out over the ball of the shoulder. It also causes the plate to ride slightly lower on the back, which is not an issue with single tank diving but could be with doubles (wasn't for me).

I also switched my Mexico plate, because Danny didn't like the crossed straps, and I can cope with it, but the crossed straps are more comfortable. I think it depends on how wide your shoulders are in relation to the slots in the particular plate you are using.

You can easily go from crossed to uncrossed, but if you start out uncrossed and trim the harness to optimal length, you will not have enough webbing to cross them, should it turn out to be necessary. So if you think it might be, leave extra webbing at the start.
