HOG D1 regulator stuck purge is a real problem.

So the stuck purge button on the regulator is a real problem. It stuck on me *4* times today in sandy conditions (water and waves stirring up fine sand everywhere).

1. Before diving, I took it apart and rinsed button and insides with fresh water. Verified that the button was moving freely and there was no additional plastic from the molding process getting in the way.

2. Wet diving, came out walking out, regs did not touch the bottom at all.

3. Rinsed off the regs under a faucet, taking care to rinse away the faceplate.

4. Pushed in button, and buttons on both regs got stuck.

5. Need to take apart, dismantle button, rinse out.

This is a real problem. It needs to get fixed with a flexible faceplate design.

@fuzzybabybunny: As ColinB recommended, PM cerich here on ScubaBoard or move the post to the HOG manufacturer's forum. I'm sure cerich will be able to help you out.

To clarify, the purge button is physically getting stuck/trapped/frozen in the depressed position, right? The reason I ask is that some people think that a second stage free-flow is always caused by "stuck" purge button. That isn't the case at all. Properly tuned regs can free-flow when the inhalation adjustment knob is turned all the way out, the Venturi lever is in the "+"/dive position, and the purge button is depressed. Switching the Venturi lever to the "-"/pre-dive position should stop the free-flow. At least that's how aggressively I like to tune my Apeks regs. :)

FWIW, your offered solution (flexible faceplate design) is not the issue. My Apeks second stages have a rigid faceplate very similar to the HOG regs...and I've never had an issue with sticky purge buttons.

I've only heard of the problem here on Scubaboard, and honestly haven't been had one sent to me from anybody who complained about the purge sticking.

That said please send me your regs to inspect so I can actually see "problem" units.

I dive them in crappy conditions and haven't had any issue, so I really do want to see if it is a tolerance issue or a molding issue with some purge buttons. I also suspect it could be a slight offset purge button decal issue, but need to see it.

You will NOT see a flexible faceplate design on the HOG second stage, I want durability and they don't provide that.
 
For what its worth:

I have around 60 dives on my HOG regs so far and haven't had this problem once!

I have no need or inteest in a different faceplate....

I like them so much I just bought a bunch more!!

I will try and call you sometime tomorrow. I'm curious - what are the durability issues of the flexible faceplates? I examined a DiveRite faceplate today and it was one single piece, very simple, with no obvious way for it to ever get stuck. And with how plastics are engineered now I would think that it could take a ton of beating.

I'd expect this to occur only on shore dives, and only in sandy conditions with sand of a certain size. Like I said, sand is the culprit 100% of the time and the beach I dive has sand particles floating and churned up in the middle of the water. I do not expect this to ever happen if all you do is boat dive, for example. It should never happen in a pool. I have had this happen as well when I've crawled onto beaches because sand and stuff hits the regulators.
 
Stand up or buy a furrow reg by plough.
That will give you the Edge.

@fuzzybabybunny: Monastery has rather large-sized grains of sand. Is that where you've been using this particular reg setup? :shocked2:

Those Monaster-berries get lodged in every nook and cranny of one's dive gear, particularly with the crawling exit.

Get this equipment issue sorted out before doing anymore dives...especially the solo deep dives that you've been doing. (I wouldn't recommend doing such dives with a reliable reg setup, but that's just me.)

they rot and only last about 3-4 years
